Luna Aurora Borealis Acoustic Guitar Review

Buying a Luna guitar is more than purchasing an instrument made of wood – it’s about joining the Luna Tribe.  With your unique Luna guitar, you can express your artistic side while you discover and appreciate every curve of your experience.  There’s no doubt that when you spot a Luna guitar, it’s a Luna – they’re unique, strange, and anomalous.  Just take a closer look at the Aurora Borealis and you’ll find it’s a lot more intricate than you initially thought!

Close up of finish on Luna Aurora Borealis guitarAlthough we’re itching to jump the gun and get right into its aesthetic appeal, let’s start with the technical specs.  The Aurora is a 3/4-scale guitar with 19 frets, 43mm nut width, and C shape neck; sealed die-cast chrome tuners, white bridge pins with black dots, and a 22.5″ neck scale.

The guitar has a laminate body and flat top made up of basswood.  The neck is mahogany with a black walnut fingerboard and a rosewood bridge.  The petite body of the guitar features a cutaway that provides comfort and lengthens playing time.  Now to the good part!

While the size and design are definitely going to attract the eyes of small children, a whimsical, small adult might feel a spirit connection to this guitar.  It has a Black Pearl finish with black body binding.  The sound hole features the iconic Luna Crescent Moon rosette.  The frets glow (not literally) with Moon Phase inlays.  If there’s a guitar that embodies the night sky, it’s the Aurora Borealis.  But, that’s not it.

The headstock, top, back and sides, and even the backside of the neck are decked out in glistening glitter.  But, the glitter isn’t what makes the guitar sound good.  Being a 3/4-size guitar, it’s not going to project like a full-size dreadnought.  However, the sound is bright with some warmth, and it stays in tune thanks to having decent tuning gears for the price.  In one word, this celestial guitar sure is charming!

PROS:

Buyer’s Feedback on the Luna 3/4 Guitar

Headstock on Luna Aurora BorealisBasic and entry-level models tend to have varying degrees of issues with quality.  From poor bridge pins to disengaging tuning pegs, the issues can be unique across the board due to low-grade manufacturing for low-cost products.  This is true of the Luna guitar.

The glitter might also make this a guitar more suited for girls as boys might not be that interested in the design.  However, that doesn’t take away from its captivating appeal.  In fact, it’s the glitter that really did it for the happy buyers.  The sound wasn’t something that blew them away, but to help a child move up from a nylon string guitar to steel, this was good enough for practice, couch-playing, and travel.

Alternatives to Consider

Considering the finish, cutaway, and the size, you’d want to fairly compare to another guitar intended for kids.  The Hola! Music HG-36N may fit the bill with its 3/4-size body, multiple color options, and TUSQ hardware.  To help stretch your dollar a little further, the HG-36N guitar comes with a few accessories to sweeten the deal.

If the idea of landing a ton of accessories in the purchase sounds like a great buy, then pick your way over to the Yamaha JR1 FG Junior 3/4 guitar.  This acoustic comes with everything you could hope to start off with especially if you’re a beginner, taking lessons, or you simply don’t want to spend extra purchasing accessories individually.  The JR1 isn’t necessarily marketed as a kid’s guitar, but it is a Junior guitar that’s excellent for children or for travel since it has a compact size.

Luna Aurora Borealis Q&A

Is the Luna a Kid’s Guitar?

Yes, this guitar is intended for children.  The design, size, and cutaway is ideal for younger players to transition from nylon to steel while also promoting comfort and playability.  Players aged 8-12 may find the 3/4-size ideal for their height, arm length, and hand span.

Is this a Small Guitar?

This is smaller than a dreadnought being about 3/4 the size of the full-size guitar.  In this sense, it’s a small and compact guitar.  However, the 3/4-size measurement doesn’t have an exacting universal standard.  The Luna guitar is slightly larger than the Yamaha JR1 FG Junior 3/4 guitar and is the same size of 36″ as the Hola! Music HG-36N guitar.

What are the Finish Options on the Aurora Borealis?

This is the Black Pearl Aurora Borealis guitar.  There is also the same lunar-themed guitar in pink, teal, and white.

Does the Borealis Acoustic Guitar come with Accessories?

Unfortunately, the Luna guitar comes as a solo piece with pre-strung strings.

Where is the Luna Aurora Borealis Guitar Made?

This guitar is made and manufactured in China.

Does the Acoustic Guitar have Strap Buttons?

Yes, the guitar has two strap buttons for attaching a strap with ease.  One button is on the base of the guitar and the other is found on the heel.

Is the Luna guitar Playable out of the box?

The guitar may need a professional setup or an experienced adult could tweak the guitar.  While it’s intended to be playable out of the box, you may want to upgrade from the stock strings included, smoothen out the frets, and adjust action if needed.

Hardware/Electronics You’ll Need:

It would’ve been nice to see at least a case thrown in with the Luna guitar, but unfortunately, it’s not the case (pun intended!).  This means that if you’re getting your kid set up with lessons professionally or at home, you’re still going to need to fork out some cash to buy some essential accessories.  Wondering what the differences are between what you need and what you want?  If you know nothing about guitars yourself, we have you covered.
